Description
From a superior (overhead) perspective, the scalp is rendered in layers, with skin and epicranial tissues overlying the pericranium across the calvaria. Red arterial channels form an anastomosing network that courses anteriorly toward the forehead and posteriorly toward the occiput, with branches running in the superficial fascia superficial to the epicranial aponeurosis and communicating across the midline. Blue superficial veins accompany the arteries, and fine yellow cutaneous nerves track alongside them, reflecting the tight neurovascular pairing typical of the scalp. Orientation is clear: vessels radiate laterally over the temporal regions and converge medially toward the sagittal midline. An overhead map of scalp arteries matters because bleeding from scalp lacerations is rarely trivial, the dense fibrous septa of the superficial fascia tether vessel walls open, so transected arteries do not spasm and retract the way they do in looser tissues.
