Description

Arising from the dorsal metacarpal arteries on the dorsum of the hand, the dorsal digital arteries course distally along the medial and lateral margins of the index through little fingers, running superficial to the phalanges but closely related to the dorsal extensor expansion. Proximal to the metacarpophalangeal joints, branches traverse the intermetacarpal spaces beside the metacarpals and their dorsal interossei, then continue over the proximal and middle phalanges toward the distal phalanx. The posterior perspective also places the extensor tendons centrally on each digit, with the vessels tracking just off-midline on either side. Dorsal digital arterial anatomy matters when dorsal approaches to the fingers are used for fracture fixation, tendon procedures, or skin flaps, where small-caliber vessels can be injured by incisions placed too close to the lateral borders of the digit.
