Description

Anterior to the male knee joint, the femoral condyles and proximal tibia frame the patella while a periarticular arterial ring encircles the capsule at the level of the joint line. Genicular branches course medially and laterally around the distal femur and proximal tibia, forming an anastomotic network that links the femoral system above to the tibial inflow below. Small arterioles track along the margins of the patellar ligament and retinacular tissues, with companion veins in blue running parallel to the arterial paths. Understanding this anterior genicular pattern matters when you are thinking about perfusion after trauma or surgery because knee vascularity depends less on a single named vessel and more on the redundancy of the anastomoses. Total knee arthroplasty, tibial tubercle osteotomy, and extensive lateral release can disrupt peri-patellar branches and contribute to wound problems or patellar osteonecrosis, particularly when prior incisions have already compromised the superficial vascular plexus. Collateral flow through the genicular arteries also becomes clinically visible when the superficial femoral artery is occluded and the popliteal segment is supplied via the genicular network. Landmarks for planning. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal modules to teach periarticular anastomoses, or in orthopedic and vascular publications when illustrating incision planning, postoperative skin perfusion, and routes of collateral circulation around the knee. It also fits well in preoperative counseling materials for arthroplasty and complex ligament reconstruction where anterior soft-tissue handling affects healing.
