Description

Arising from the common carotid artery in the neck, the internal carotid artery ascends deep to the angle of the mandible toward the carotid canal, while the external carotid artery remains more superficial and gives off named cervical and facial branches. Along the left lateral skull and face, you would expect to see the superficial temporal artery coursing superiorly anterior to the auricle, the facial artery sweeping anteroinferiorly across the mandible toward the oral region, and the maxillary artery tracking deep in the infratemporal fossa with branches that communicate toward the orbit and nasal cavity. Bony landmarks of the cranium, mandible, and upper cervical vertebrae frame the vascular paths, clarifying what lies superficial versus deep. Clean relationships. Clear laterality. This left lateral perspective matters because it mirrors how clinicians think about scalp and facial perfusion, and where bleeding occurs when common surface vessels are injured. Lacerations over the temple can involve the superficial temporal artery, and surgical or cosmetic procedures in the preauricular region, parotid bed, or along the mandibular margin benefit from a mental map of external carotid branching and its proximity to the skull base. Deep arterial anatomy is also clinically tied to epistaxis management (sphenopalatine territory from the maxillary artery) and to embolization planning for head and neck tumors, where feeders often arise from external carotid branches and anastomose with intracranial circulation.
