Seen in lateral projection, the L1 vertebra sits at the thoracolumbar junction, with its large vertebral body positioned anteriorly and the vertebral arch, pedicles, and laminae forming the posterior boundary of the vertebral canal. Superior and inferior vertebral endplates define the disc spaces for T12 to L1 and L1 to L2, and the anterior contour of L1 marks the transition into lumbar lordosis. Posteriorly, the spinous process projects inferiorly and slightly posterior, while the superior and inferior articular processes lie just behind the pedicles, orienting the zygapophysial joints for flexion extension.
