Description
Sectioning through the L3 vertebra in a lateral projection brings the vertebral body into primary focus, with the superior and inferior endplates aligned against the adjacent intervertebral discs. Posterior to the body, the pedicles lead into the laminae, outlining the vertebral canal and the posterior elements that contribute to the lumbar lordosis. Superior and inferior articular processes sit posterolaterally, framing the zygapophysial (facet) joints, while the spinous process projects posteriorly and the transverse processes extend laterally as levers for the paraspinal muscles. Weight transfer is the story at L3. The lumbar vertebral body and its endplate contours matter in degenerative disc disease, where disc height loss shifts load toward the facet joints and can narrow the lateral recess and intervertebral foramen, contributing to L3 or L4 radiculopathy patterns depending on the level affected.
