Description
Seen in lateral profile, the L2 vertebra is sectioned to expose the vertebral body anteriorly and the vertebral arch posteriorly, with the pedicles bridging between them and forming the superior and inferior vertebral notches. Those notches align with the adjacent level to outline the intervertebral foramen, positioned posterolateral to the intervertebral disc and just inferior to the L2 pedicle. Posterior elements including the laminae and spinous process lie posterior to the vertebral canal, while the superior and inferior articular processes project at the junction of pedicle and lamina to define the zygapophysial (facet) joints. Lumbar discs appear as lighter cushions between vertebral bodies. A lateral section at L2 matters because it makes the bony boundaries of the intervertebral foramen easy to teach and easy to relate to symptoms. Foraminal stenosis from disc height loss, posterolateral disc herniation, or osteophytes at the uncovering margins can narrow this corridor and irritate the exiting L2 spinal nerve, producing anterior thigh pain or altered sensation over the proximal thigh. It also clarifies why pedicle-based instrumentation targets dense bone just posterior to the vertebral body, and why the pedicle is a hard stop when surgeons work near the canal.
