Description
Centered on the mid cervical spine, the C5 vertebra is isolated in lateral profile against the surrounding vertebral column and intervertebral discs, with the cervical lordosis reading clearly in the background. The vertebral body (centrum) sits anteriorly, while the vertebral arch and spinous process project posteriorly, defining the posterior contour of the neck. Superior and inferior articular processes are shown stacked in the sagittal plane, forming the zygapophysial (facet) joints with C4 above and C6 below, and the lamina and pedicles bridge the body to the posterior elements. C5 stands out. Lateral anatomy at C5 matters because it is the workhorse level for both degenerative and traumatic patterns in the cervical spine, where disc height loss at C5–C6 and facet arthrosis can combine to narrow the intervertebral foramen and irritate the C6 nerve root.
