Description
Presented from a lateral head and neck perspective, the submental vein is traced along the submental region inferior to the mandibular body, coursing posteriorly near the inferior border of the mandible toward the facial venous system. Superficial facial musculature frames the vessel, with the masseter positioned posterolateral to the mandibular ramus and the temporalis occupying the temporal fossa superiorly. Inferiorly, the sternocleidomastoid defines the lateral cervical contour as venous tributaries in the cheek and chin converge toward larger named channels. Bony landmarks of the mandible and adjacent cranial vault anchor the topography. Surgeons and proceduralists care about this venous anatomy because the submental vein often lies in the working corridor for submental liposuction, platysmaplasty, and transcervical approaches to the submandibular space, where even small venules can produce persistent bleeding and postoperative bruising. Venous routes in the mandibular and chin region also matter for spread of odontogenic or cutaneous infection, and for interpreting contrast enhancement patterns on CT angiography or MR venography when assessing facial swelling. A clean lateral depiction makes the relationship to the mandibular border easier to teach. It is a practical map.
