Description
Positioned on the lateral midface, the os zygomaticum (malar, cheekbone) is highlighted against the surrounding skull, with its frontal process ascending superiorly to meet the zygomatic process of the frontal bone at the lateral orbital rim. Anteriorly, the zygomatic bone articulates with the maxilla at the zygomaticomaxillary suture and contributes to the inferolateral wall and rim of the orbit, while posteriorly its temporal process projects posterolaterally to meet the zygomatic process of the temporal bone and complete the zygomatic arch. Superior and posterior to the arch, the parietal and temporal bones are seen with the squamosal suture, and the coronal suture is visible between frontal and parietal bones. A true lateral perspective is the workhorse view for teaching the architecture and clinical relevance of the zygomaticomaxillary complex. Most zygomatic fractures involve the zygomaticomaxillary buttress, the zygomaticofrontal suture, and the arch, and displacement can widen the face, flatten the malar eminence, or impinge on the coronoid process of the mandible with trismus. Simple relationships become obvious here: the zygomatic arch forms the lateral boundary of the temporal fossa and provides the origin for masseter, so contour changes are not just cosmetic. A key landmark.
