Description
Arising from the maxillary division (V2) of the trigeminal nerve, the zygomaticotemporal nerve courses laterally within the orbit, passes through the zygomatic bone via the zygomaticotemporal foramen, then sweeps superiorly over the temporal fossa toward the anterior temple. In lateral profile, the zygomatic arch sits inferior to its cutaneous distribution, while the lateral orbital rim and frontozygomatic region form the bony corridor that frames its emergence. The auricle and external acoustic meatus lie posterior to the nerve’s terminal field, and the cervical vertebrae with segmental spinal nerves provide posterior neck context beneath the cranial base. Color coding separates the nasal cavity from surrounding facial bones and highlights the peripheral sensory branches. Surface pain in the temple is often attributed to migraine or temporalis myofascial triggers, but the zygomaticotemporal nerve is a frequent culprit in zygomaticotemporal neuralgia and can be entrapped where it pierces fascia near the temporalis.
