Description
Seen from a lateral perspective, the femoral artery descends along the anteromedial thigh before giving off muscular branches that course laterally into the quadriceps femoris, while more posterior perforating branches from the profunda femoris track toward the hamstring compartment. Distally, the vessel passes behind the knee as the popliteal artery, with genicular branches fanning around the lateral aspect of the knee joint. Parallel deep veins accompany the named arteries as venae comitantes, and the superficial venous channel of the lateral thigh may be suggested where it crosses toward the groin. Lateral thigh vascular anatomy matters because many access points, flaps, and traumatic injuries intersect it. Femoral arterial puncture is performed just inferior to the inguinal ligament, but a high stick risks retroperitoneal hemorrhage and a low stick can enter the profunda femoris, complicating hemostasis. Around the distal femur and knee, the popliteal artery is fixed across the joint line, so posterior knee dislocation or a supracondylar femur fracture can produce limb-threatening ischemia even when distal pulses seem present. Use this plate for teaching the femoral triangle and adductor canal transition, for correlating CTA or Doppler findings of femoral and popliteal stenosis, or for illustrating collateral pathways relevant to superficial femoral artery occlusion.
