Presented from a lateral, slightly posterolateral perspective of the male hip and proximal thigh, the gluteus minimus is isolated in color beneath the subcutaneous tissues, lying deep to gluteus medius and spanning from the external surface of the ilium to the anterior facet of the greater trochanter. Anterior and inferior to it, the proximal quadriceps mass (rectus femoris and vastus lateralis) occupies the anterolateral thigh, while posteriorly the lateral hamstrings blend into the posterior compartment contours. The iliotibial tract tracks vertically along the lateral thigh as a superficial landmark, separating the anterior tensor fasciae latae region from the posterior gluteal and hamstring bulk. Clear fascial planes. Bony references include the iliac crest superiorly and the greater trochanter laterally. Gluteus minimus deserves this spotlight because it is a primary hip abductor and internal rotator, and it stabilizes the pelvis in single-leg stance in tandem with gluteus medius. Weakness or denervation of the superior gluteal nerve produces abductor lurch and a Trendelenburg pattern, findings that often get attributed to medius alone unless you remember minimus shares the same nerve supply and insertional footprint on the greater trochanter. The view also supports surgical orientation: during an anterolateral or direct lateral approach to total hip arthroplasty, the gluteal abductors and their tendinous insertions are at risk, and postoperative abductor insufficiency correlates with disruption in this lateral peritrochanteric envelope.
