Description
Across the anterior thigh of an adult male, the quadriceps femoris dominates the field, with rectus femoris centrally positioned and the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis expanding laterally and medially toward the patella. Along the anterolateral margin, the tensor fasciae latae blends into the thickened fascia lata as the iliotibial tract, running inferiorly toward the lateral aspect of the knee. Sartorius crosses obliquely from the anterior superior iliac spine toward the medial knee, forming a superficial strap over the femoral triangle region and partially overlapping the adductor compartment. Deep bony landmarks of the femur and the contours of the knee joint anchor the muscle bellies and their distal tendinous convergence. An anterior or anterolateral perspective on these superficial thigh muscles matters when you need to explain extensor mechanism mechanics and surface anatomy around the patella.
