Description
Lateral profile of an adult male neck and upper thorax combines semi-transparent osseous landmarks with the major cervical vessels. The cervical vertebrae (C1 to C7) stack in normal lordosis posterior to the airway, continuing inferiorly toward the upper thoracic spine, while the ribs slope anteroinferiorly from their vertebral attachments. Superficial and deep to the sternocleidomastoid region, the common carotid artery ascends and bifurcates into the internal and external carotid arteries near the upper cervical level, accompanied by the internal jugular vein coursing more lateral. Clavicle and manubrial contours anchor the cervicothoracic junction. Clear orientation. This lateral arrangement matters when you need to teach, plan, or document where vessels sit relative to bony corridors and the cervical spine. The carotid bifurcation level, variation in the course of the internal carotid artery, and the proximity of the internal jugular vein to the transverse processes help frame common procedures such as central venous catheter placement, carotid endarterectomy exposure along the anterior border of sternocleidomastoid, and hemostatic control in penetrating neck trauma. The overlay with the cervical curvature also supports interpretation of lateral radiographs and angiographic thinking, where alignment and depth cues often get lost in purely schematic diagrams.
