Description

Seen from a lateral aspect of the male knee, the femur lies superior to the tibia with the patella positioned anterior to the distal femur, while the fibular head sits posterolateral to the proximal tibia as a key bony landmark. A circumflex vein is traced in blue as it curves around the lateral circumference of the joint region, running superficial to portions of the fibrous capsule and tracking near accompanying red arterial channels and smaller arterioles. The vessel network hugs the periarticular margins, with branches passing anteriorly toward the patellar region and posteriorly toward the popliteal side. Bony contours and articular cartilage cap the femoral condyle and tibial plateau. Lateral periarticular veins matter because they mirror the routes of the genicular arteries and define the venous outflow pathways that can be disrupted or recruited after trauma and surgery around the lateral compartment. During approaches that work near the fibular head and lateral capsule, including exposure for lateral meniscal work or fixation of proximal tibial and fibular injuries, small circumflex venous channels are common sources of persistent oozing and can obscure the field out of proportion to their size. This view also reinforces how closely superficial vessels can course relative to the capsule and retinacular tissues. Small vessel, real consequence. Use this artwork in lower limb anatomy teaching to pair osteology with periarticular vascular anatomy, and in orthopedic or sports medicine publications that need a clean lateral map of knee vessels for operative orientation and hemostasis planning. It also fits exam prep materials that contrast arterial supply with venous drainage around the knee. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
