Description
Medial to the fibular head, the circumflex fibular artery curves around the proximal fibula as a slender red vessel closely applied to periosteum, with accompanying blue venae comitantes tracking alongside it. The proximal tibia and distal femur frame the joint superiorly, while the articular cartilage caps the condylar surfaces and the patella sits anterior to the femoral trochlea. From this medial perspective, the artery’s course reads as a tight arc sweeping from posterior toward the lateral compartment, skirting the posterolateral corner of the knee. Bone is the dominant landmark. That relationship to the fibular head and neck matters in real cases. Surgical exposures for posterolateral corner reconstruction, proximal tibiofibular joint procedures, and lateral meniscal repairs can bring dissection close to the circumflex fibular artery, where tethering to bone increases the risk of traction or laceration if the plane is taken too deep. Its caliber also makes it easy to miss during hemostasis, yet injury can complicate arthroscopy portals or open approaches with persistent bleeding in the lateral gutter. Educators can drop this asset directly into lower limb anatomy labs when teaching the genicular region, or into orthopedic and sports medicine modules covering the posterolateral knee and safe dissection planes.
