Description

Posterior anatomy of the knee and proximal leg frames the circumflex fibular artery as it arises deep in the popliteal fossa, typically from the posterior tibial artery or the tibioperoneal trunk just distal to the popliteus. From its origin, the vessel courses laterally toward the fibular (peroneal) compartment, passing posterior to the tibia and approaching the fibular head and neck where it participates in periarticular anastomoses. The popliteal artery and popliteal vein occupy the central posterior corridor, with smaller genicular branches fanning superiorly and inferiorly around the knee joint. Bilateral rendering allows side-to-side comparison of branching pattern and caliber. Clean and readable. Posterior presentation matters here because variations at the popliteal bifurcation and the takeoff of the peroneal (fibular) system are common sources of confusion in surgical anatomy and angiographic interpretation. This is the territory evaluated in popliteal artery entrapment syndrome and during workup of critical limb ischemia, where collateral channels around the knee can preserve distal perfusion when the superficial femoral or popliteal segment is diseased.
