Description

Seen in left lateral profile, the skull provides bony landmarks for the arterial course, including the zygomatic arch, temporal fossa, mandibular ramus and condylar process, the orbit, and the maxilla with dentition. Deep temporal arteries ascend superiorly from the maxillary artery in the infratemporal fossa, passing deep to the zygomatic arch to enter the deep surface of temporalis, where they run between muscle and the squamous temporal bone toward the superior temporal line. More superficially, branches of the external carotid system in the parotid region can be inferred, with veins accompanying the arteries along parallel paths. Orientation is clear: vessels track superiorly and slightly posteriorly toward the calvaria while remaining lateral to the cranial cavity. For teaching head and neck vascular anatomy, this lateral projection clarifies the distinction between the deep temporal arteries and the superficial temporal artery, a common point of confusion when students only see surface vessels. The relationship to the infratemporal fossa matters in surgery: deep temporal branches can bleed during temporalis muscle elevation in a pterional craniotomy or during coronal approaches that reflect the temporalis off the temporal squama. Bleeding can be brisk. Their origin from the maxillary artery also makes them relevant when discussing iatrogenic vascular injury during mandibular condylar procedures and when mapping collateral supply in external carotid ligation. This artwork suits gross anatomy and dental anatomy courses covering the infratemporal fossa, temporalis, and external carotid branches, and it reads well in neurosurgical and maxillofacial texts describing temporalis dissection and craniotomy exposure. It also supports patient education graphics for temporal region surgery where you need to show why careful hemostasis is required near the zygomatic arch.
