Description
Arising from the external carotid artery in the carotid triangle, the facial artery tracks superior and anterior, passing deep to the posterior belly of the digastric and stylohyoid before entering the submandibular region. It then hooks around the inferior border of the mandible just anterior to the masseter, a palpable point where the vessel becomes superficial and begins its characteristically tortuous ascent across the cheek toward the angle of the mouth and lateral nose. Lateral to this course, the masseter and temporalis frame the mandibular ramus and temporal fossa, while the sternocleidomastoid defines the posterolateral neck; superficial venous channels such as the external jugular vein and facial vein may be shown in parallel, typically posterior and lateral to the artery. Surgical planning depends on this anatomy. The artery’s bend at the mandibular margin sits directly in the field for submandibular gland surgery, mandibular angle approaches, and laceration repair, and its proximity to the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve makes dissection unforgiving. Superiorly, the vessel’s relationship to the modiolus and nasolabial region matters in local flap design (for example, facial artery musculomucosal flaps) and in controlling hemorrhage from cheek or lip trauma. Palpation and compression at the anterior masseter border remain classic bedside maneuvers. Use this plate for head and neck anatomy teaching in dental, medical, and speech and swallowing curricula when tracing external carotid branches and their surface landmarks. It also suits operative atlases, EM and trauma references, and patient education graphics explaining facial laceration bleeding or planned incisions near the mandible.
