Description
From a lateral perspective, the male hip joint is defined by the hemispheric head of the femur seated within the acetabulum of the os coxae, with the femoral neck projecting inferomedially toward the shaft. Superior to the socket, the ilium rises to the iliac crest, while the anterior and posterior acetabular rims frame the articular lunate surface. Along the acetabular margin, an acetabular labrum is suggested as a fibrocartilaginous ring that deepens the socket and maintains contact with the femoral head during motion. Orientation is clear. Clinically, a true lateral hip view helps clarify why femoroacetabular impingement occurs at the head neck junction and acetabular rim, and why labral pathology often accompanies early chondral wear in young adult males with cam morphology. The relationship between the femoral head, neck, and acetabular coverage also underpins stability, making this an effective teaching image for posterior hip dislocation patterns (femoral head driven posterior to the acetabulum in dashboard injuries) and for leg length and offset considerations in total hip arthroplasty templating.
