Description
Oriented from a lateral perspective, the distal femur lies superior to the proximal tibia, with the lateral meniscus interposed along the tibiofemoral joint line. A dense periarticular arterial network encircles the capsule, fed proximally by the femoral system and continued distally toward the anterior tibial region, with the genicular branches coursing around the lateral femoral condyle and along the proximal tibia. Blue-stained stabilizers frame the articulation, with the fibular (lateral) collateral ligament running from the lateral femoral epicondyle to the fibular head region while the cruciate ligaments occupy the intercondylar space deep to the capsule. Small capsular and periosteal twigs track close to ligament insertions and the meniscal periphery. Lateral visualization of the knee arteries matters because the genicular anastomosis is where orthopedic exposure, arthroscopy portal placement, and traumatic lacerations intersect. Injury to the popliteal artery or its genicular branches can follow knee dislocation or high-energy tibial plateau fractures, and the collateral network becomes clinically relevant when femoropopliteal flow is compromised or when planning bypass targets around the joint line. Bleeding is not subtle. Educators can use this plate in lower-limb anatomy and musculoskeletal modules to connect ligamentous stability (collateral and cruciate ligaments, meniscus) with the arterial supply of the synovial membrane and capsule.
