Description
Positioned on the lateral aspect of the proximal leg, the superior tibiofibular joint is framed by the lateral tibial condyle superiorly and medially and the head of the fibula inferiorly and laterally, with a thin articular capsule spanning between them. Fine articular branches course toward the joint line from the lateral side, running deep to the superficial fascia and approaching the capsule near the fibular head. Proximal to the articulation, the distal femur and lateral compartment of the knee joint appear in section, with articular cartilage and the synovial cavity indicated at the tibiofemoral surfaces. Yellow neural elements surrounding the joint provide orientation for the likely contributors, most often branches associated with the common fibular (peroneal) nerve as it passes around the neck of the fibula.
