Description
Seen in lateral profile on a male trunk, the superficial lymphatic network of the anterolateral abdominal wall is traced within the superficial fascia from the costal margin to the pubic region. Above the level of the umbilicus, lymphatic vessels course superolaterally toward the anterior axillary line, following the skin and subcutaneous tissue overlying the external oblique and serratus anterior region. Below the umbilicus, channels descend inferolaterally across the lower abdomen toward the superficial inguinal lymph nodes, running parallel to the superficial epigastric and superficial circumflex iliac vessels near the inguinal ligament. Few structures clarify surface drainage boundaries so cleanly. This side view matters because the umbilical watershed guides clinical reasoning about where infection or malignancy from the abdominal wall is likely to metastasize first, axillary versus inguinal nodal basins. Surgeons also use these pathways when planning incisions and flap elevation, since wide undermining in abdominoplasty or lower abdominal approaches can disrupt superficial lymphatics and contribute to seroma formation or persistent edema. For bedside teaching, the illustration supports correlation with cellulitis tracking patterns and with staging pathways in cutaneous melanoma of the trunk. Use it in gross anatomy and clinical anatomy courses when introducing lymphatic drainage territories, and in surgical texts covering abdominal wall reconstruction, abdominoplasty, and groin or axillary node evaluation.
