Description
Anterior abdominal wall anatomy is rendered with emphasis on the superficial lymphatic network overlying the rectus abdominis within the rectus sheath, bordered laterally by the linea semilunaris and inferiorly approaching the inguinal region. Superficial lymphatic vessels (green) form a subcutaneous plexus that converges around the umbilicus, where a transverse watershed separates predominantly superior drainage toward the axillary lymph nodes from inferior drainage toward the superficial inguinal lymph nodes. Superficial veins (blue), including tributaries consistent with the superficial epigastric and thoracoepigastric pathways, run in parallel planes and help orient the lymphatic channels across the midline at the linea alba. Pelvic and proximal thigh musculature is included inferiorly as an anatomic reference for the groin and femoral triangle region. That umbilical watershed is the teaching point. It explains why cutaneous infection, postoperative seroma, or melanoma of the infraumbilical abdominal wall commonly presents with superficial inguinal lymphadenopathy, while lesions above the umbilicus track to axillary nodes, a pattern that also guides sentinel lymph node mapping and clinical staging. The relationship to the superficial venous network matters in practice, since thoracoepigastric collateral flow and superficial lymphatic drainage can both become conspicuous with abdominal wall edema, portal-systemic collateralization, or postmastectomy lymphedema patterns extending onto the trunk. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and surface anatomy modules to teach lymphatic territories of the trunk, or in surgical, dermatologic, and oncologic materials discussing incision planning, flap elevation planes, and regional nodal basins for the anterior abdominal wall and groin.
