Description
Seen from an anterior perspective, the superficial lymphatic vessels of the male upper limb course within the subcutaneous tissue of the arm and forearm, tracking the two dominant superficial venous channels. Laterally, lymphatics accompany the cephalic vein as they ascend along the anterolateral forearm and arm toward the deltopectoral groove, where they pass toward the infraclavicular region. Medially, a second set follows the basilic vein along the anteromedial forearm and arm, converging toward the medial bicipital groove and the axillary fold. Underlying surface anatomy provides orientation, including pectoralis major on the anterior thorax, deltoid over the shoulder, and biceps brachii on the anterior arm. Clear landmarks. This configuration matters because superficial lymphatic drainage patterns dictate where infection and malignancy spread and where clinicians should look first for nodal involvement. Lymphangitis can produce red streaking that follows these same superficial pathways, and the medial arm collectors that parallel the basilic vein often drain to axillary nodes implicated in breast cancer staging and melanoma of the upper limb. The lateral channel toward the deltopectoral region explains why palpable deltopectoral or infraclavicular nodes can appear when proximal lateral arm drainage is obstructed or inflamed. Ideal for teaching upper-limb lymphatic drainage in gross anatomy and clinical anatomy courses, and for illustrating lymphangitis, upper extremity lymphedema, or sentinel node pathways in surgical, dermatology, and oncology publications. It also supports patient-facing diagrams that relate superficial veins (cephalic and basilic) to adjacent lymphatic collectors during discussion of arm swelling after axillary surgery.
