Description
Seen from the lateral aspect, the talus sits superior to the calcaneus and posterior to the tarsal and metatarsal rays, with the lateral malleolar region framing the ankle mortise. Along the plantar surface, the intrinsic plantar layers track from the calcaneal tuberosity anteriorly toward the metatarsal heads and phalanges, while extrinsic tendons course distally behind the lateral ankle before fanning across the midfoot. Lateral landmarks such as the cuboid and the base of the fifth metatarsal help orient the relationships between hindfoot, midfoot, and forefoot. A lateral foot view earns its keep when you need to teach or plan around the peroneal compartment and the lateral column, where the fibularis (peroneus) longus and brevis tendons run in close proximity to the calcaneofibular ligament and the subtalar joint.
