Description
Seen from the lateral aspect, the superficial venous network tracks from the dorsum of the foot and around the lateral malleolus into the small saphenous vein, which ascends in the posterior midline of the calf toward the popliteal fossa. Perforating veins connect this superficial pathway to the deep venous system, where the anterior tibial veins run in the anterior compartment with the anterior tibial artery, and the posterior tibial veins and fibular (peroneal) veins course deep to the soleus along the tibia and fibula. Distally, dorsal metatarsal veins converge into the dorsal venous arch, while plantar venous channels communicate around the margins of the foot. Key relationships stay clear: superficial veins lie in the subcutaneous tissue, deep tibial routes sit adjacent to their companion arteries beneath the deep fascia. A lateral lower leg view earns its keep when you are teaching where venous disease hides. The small saphenous vein and its variable termination at the saphenopopliteal junction matter in duplex mapping for varicosities, endovenous ablation planning, and recurrence after surgery. Deep calf veins are the other focus, since acute DVT often involves the paired posterior tibial or fibular veins, and missed calf thrombus can propagate proximally.
