Description
Seen in lateral profile, the cerebral hemisphere is rendered with superficial gyri and sulci, while the meningeal venous system is traced along the inner table of the calvaria. The venous lacunae (lacunae laterales) lie lateral to the superior sagittal sinus, expanding as irregular chambers within the dura mater adjacent to the parasagittal region and communicating with meningeal veins and bridging veins from the cerebral convexity. Inferiorly, the dural reflections converge toward the tentorial margin and posterior fossa sinuses, with the cervical spinal cord and upper cervical vertebrae continuing caudally at the foramen magnum region. Cranial nerves emerge from the brainstem, and cervical spinal nerves project laterally from the upper spinal canal. Lacunae laterales matter because they sit at the interface between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) resorption and dural venous drainage, receiving flow from arachnoid granulations that cluster along the superior sagittal sinus and into the parasagittal dural spaces, a relationship that is easy to lose in axial-only teaching. One practical correlation is parasagittal extra-axial hemorrhage or venous sinus thrombosis, where involvement of the superior sagittal sinus and its lateral venous spaces can affect cortical venous outflow and mimic arterial stroke patterns on imaging.
