Description
Medial thigh anatomy is presented with the semitendinosus identified along the posterior compartment, arising from the ischial tuberosity and descending superficial to semimembranosus while lying posterior to adductor magnus. Distally, its long, cordlike tendon becomes prominent in the distal third of the thigh and tracks anteroinferiorly toward the proximal medial tibia, approaching the pes anserinus region just inferior to the medial tibial condyle. Anteriorly, the sartorius originates from the anterior superior iliac spine and crosses obliquely to the same medial proximal tibial area, creating a clear spatial contrast between the anterior strap muscle and the posterior hamstring. Femur, patella, tibia (medial) and fibula (lateral) provide bony landmarks for orientation. That distal tendon is the point. Semitendinosus is frequently harvested as an autograft for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and a medial perspective clarifies the safe corridor to the pes anserinus while respecting nearby structures, including the saphenous nerve and its infrapatellar branch, which are common sources of postoperative numbness. The illustration also supports teaching around hamstring strain patterns at the proximal myotendinous junction and distal tendinopathy near the anteromedial tibia, where pes anserine bursitis can mimic medial meniscal pain.
