Description
Running along the medial aspect of the male thigh, the femoral vein is shown ascending from the adductor canal toward the femoral triangle, where it lies medial to the femoral artery and deep to the fascia lata. Proximally it approaches the femoral canal and femoral ring beneath the inguinal ligament before continuing as the external iliac vein. A prominent superficial channel consistent with the great saphenous vein tracks anterior to the medial malleolus and up the medial leg and thigh to join the femoral vein at the saphenofemoral junction in the groin, with multiple superficial tributaries and communicating perforators hinted along its course. Smaller venules and superficial veins arborize across the medial calf and foot, oriented toward proximal drainage. Medial leg venous anatomy is where surface landmarks and deep relationships collide, which is why this perspective earns its keep in teaching and in procedural planning. The saphenofemoral junction is the key landmark for great saphenous vein ligation and endovenous ablation in symptomatic varicose veins, and its proximity to the femoral artery in the femoral triangle frames the risk of arterial puncture during venous cannulation or catheter placement. Deep venous thrombosis in the femoral vein also tracks clinically with calf swelling and pulmonary embolism risk, so understanding the deep system alongside the superficial network matters.
