Description
Running along the anteromedial thigh, the femoral vein continues proximally from the popliteal vein after it traverses the adductor hiatus, then ascends toward the femoral triangle where it lies medial to the femoral artery within the femoral sheath. Superficially, the great saphenous vein tracks up the medial leg and thigh and converges at the saphenofemoral junction, piercing the fascia lata at the saphenous opening to empty into the femoral vein. Smaller tributaries and venules from the calf and thigh form a blue subcutaneous network that becomes denser around the knee and ankle. Proximally, the vessel course is framed by the inguinal region as the femoral vein approaches its transition to the external iliac vein deep to the inguinal ligament. Clinically, the femoral vein is the key conduit for deep venous return from the lower limb and a common site of acute deep vein thrombosis, where thrombus can propagate proximally toward the iliac veins and raise pulmonary embolism risk. Relationship to the great saphenous vein matters in chronic venous insufficiency and varicose vein surgery, since reflux at the saphenofemoral junction or failure of perforator valves shifts flow into superficial channels. Access matters too. The femoral vein is routinely targeted for central venous catheterization, and its medial position relative to the femoral artery guides safe needle placement in the femoral triangle.
