Description
Seen from the posterior thigh of an adult male, the femoral vein is traced proximally as it continues from the popliteal vein after passing through the adductor hiatus, then courses superiorly and medially toward the femoral canal and external iliac vein. Along the distal posterior thigh and popliteal fossa, tributaries from the deep femoral system (via perforating veins) approach it from posterolateral positions, while superficial drainage from the posterior leg converges toward the small saphenous vein and its termination in the popliteal vein. The hamstring compartment forms the muscular backdrop, with biceps femoris laterally and semitendinosus and semimembranosus more medially framing the vascular pathway. Posterior mapping of the femoral and popliteal venous axis matters when you need to explain how thrombus propagates from calf veins into the popliteal and femoral veins in deep vein thrombosis, a pattern that changes treatment thresholds and imaging urgency.
