Description
Seen from the posterior aspect of an adult male thigh and leg, the deep femoral vein (vena profunda femoris) courses proximally to drain the deep compartment of the thigh and converge toward the common femoral vein near the femoral triangle. Posterior to the femoral shaft, it travels in close company with the profunda femoris artery, receiving perforating veins that pass through adductor magnus from the posterior compartment. Inferiorly, the venous pathway continues toward the popliteal region behind the knee, with the femur, tibia, fibula, and tarsal and metatarsal bones providing fixed skeletal landmarks for orientation. A posterior rendering clarifies relationships that are easy to miss in standard anterior teaching diagrams, especially the way profunda tributaries communicate with the posterior thigh and how proximal outflow funnels toward the femoral canal region. This matters clinically when you are localizing proximal deep venous thrombosis sources, interpreting duplex ultrasound findings that extend beyond the femoral vein proper, or planning approaches around the adductor hiatus where vessels transition between anterior and posterior planes. Expect anatomic variability in profunda tributaries. It is common. Use this asset for lower-limb anatomy labs, vascular surgery and interventional radiology teaching on deep venous drainage patterns, and textbook figures that contrast the femoral vein with the deep femoral (profunda) system in the proximal thigh. It also supports patient-facing education on proximal DVT distribution when paired with an anterior companion view. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
