Seen from a medial oblique angle, the lesser saphenous vein tracks superficially along the posterior calf, beginning at the lateral margin of the dorsal venous arch and coursing proximal to the popliteal fossa. The vessel runs in the subcutaneous tissue posterior to the fibula and lateral to the tibia, with the gastrocnemius and soleus forming the deep muscular bed beneath it. Deeper in the calf, the popliteal vein and its continuation into the femoral vein sit anterior and medial relative to the superficial venous line, while accompanying arteries (popliteal and femoral) lie close by, color coded for quick arterial versus venous orientation.
