Description
Running along the posterior aspect of the distal femur and proximal tibia, the popliteal artery is presented from a medial perspective as it courses through the popliteal fossa. Proximally, it lies deep to the medial femoral condyle after emerging from the adductor hiatus, then descends inferiorly toward the posterior tibial plateau where it will divide into the anterior tibial artery and the tibioperoneal trunk. Blue venous channels accompany the artery as paired popliteal veins, and the femur, tibia, and patella frame the vascular anatomy in relation to the knee joint. Orientation is clear. Clinically, this medial view clarifies why the popliteal artery is vulnerable in posterior knee dislocations and in tibial plateau fractures, where intimal injury or thrombosis can threaten distal perfusion even when pulses seem initially present. The relationship to the posterior capsule and medial condyle also tracks common pathways for vascular exposure in bypass planning or trauma exploration, and it helps explain the neurovascular compression pattern seen in popliteal artery entrapment syndrome. Distal ischemia can be limb-threatening.
