Description
Medial exposure of the male knee joint highlights the distal femur articulating with the proximal tibia, with the patella positioned anterior to the femoral trochlea and the patellar tendon (ligament) descending to the tibial tuberosity. Along the medial side, the tibial (medial) collateral ligament forms a broad capsular thickening extending from the medial femoral epicondyle to the medial tibial condyle and proximal shaft, with the joint capsule blending into adjacent periosteum. Deep to the capsule, the medial meniscus sits between the femoral and tibial articular cartilage, and the oblique popliteal ligament reinforces the posteromedial corner as it fans superomedially from the semimembranosus expansion. Medial knee anatomy matters because this side is where valgus stress is resisted and where pain generators often cluster. Partial tearing of the tibial collateral ligament commonly occurs with valgus injury, and because its deep fibers blend with the medial capsule and attach to the medial meniscus, a single traumatic event can produce combined MCL sprain and medial meniscal injury. This view also clarifies why pes anserine tendinopathy or bursitis, located anteromedial to the proximal tibia, can mimic joint line pathology during clinical examination.
