Description
Viewed from a superior, intra-articular perspective, the medial and lateral menisci rest on the tibial plateau as crescentic (C-shaped) fibrocartilage wedges interposed between the femoral condyles and the tibia. Medially, the meniscus appears broader and more open, conforming to the medial tibial condyle; laterally, the meniscus forms a tighter ring that sits more circumferentially on the lateral tibial condyle. Anteriorly, the region of the intercondylar area lies between the meniscal horns, while the femoral articular surfaces occupy the superior aspect of the field. Orientation is clear. Meniscal geometry matters because thickness and mobility differ across compartments, and that difference tracks with injury patterns: the relatively fixed medial meniscus, tethered to the joint capsule and intimately related to the medial collateral ligament, is the common site for longitudinal and bucket-handle tears after twisting injury. A superior view also clarifies how tears encroach on the central, avascular white-white zone versus the peripheral, vascular red-red zone, a distinction that guides repair versus partial meniscectomy during arthroscopy. It is a surgical map.
