Description
Centered at the inferior margin of the cricoid cartilage, the cricotracheal ligament is rendered as a dense fibroelastic band bridging to the first tracheal ring, with the cervical trachea continuing inferiorly as stacked C-shaped hyaline cartilage rings. Superior to this junction sits the thyroid cartilage, and posterolateral to the cricoid the arytenoid region is suggested as the muscular and cartilaginous framework that governs the vocal folds. Intrinsic laryngeal muscles appear as striated bundles hugging the cartilages, while adjacent membranes and ligamentous thickenings, including the cricothyroid ligament anteriorly, frame the transition from larynx to trachea. Anterior neck anatomy, cleanly organized. The cricotracheal ligament matters because it defines the laryngotracheal junction that surgeons and airway teams work across during tracheostomy, cricothyrotomy conversions, and laryngotracheal reconstruction. Post-intubation subglottic stenosis and inflammatory injury often concentrate around the cricoid and first tracheal ring, so depicting the fibroelastic attachment clarifies why the cricoid behaves as a fixed, complete ring while the trachea remains segmental and more compliant.
