Description
Presented as a labeled cross section of the adult male globe, the cornea forms the anterior transparent cap continuous with the dense sclera, while the conjunctival surface is implied along the external aspect of the anterior segment. Posterior to the cornea, the anterior and posterior chambers contain aqueous humor, bounded by the iris and its central pupil, with the ciliary body lying circumferentially just posterior and lateral to the iridocorneal angle. A biconvex lens sits immediately posterior to the iris, suspended by zonular fibers to the ciliary processes, and the vitreous body occupies the posterior cavity against the neurosensory retina; deep to the retina, the choroid and then sclera complete the tunics, with the optic nerve exiting posteriorly at the optic disc. A sagittal-style section like this is the workhorse view for teaching ocular optics because it makes the refractive pathway legible, from cornea to lens to retina, and it clarifies why small changes in lens curvature or axial length shift the focal plane in myopia and hyperopia. It also gives clean anatomic context for anterior segment disease, where angle anatomy, iris configuration, and aqueous outflow resistance determine the mechanism of open-angle versus angle-closure glaucoma.
