Description
Presented in lateral section, the male globe is shown with the transparent cornea continuous with the sclera at the limbus, where the anterior chamber angle and peripheral iris sit just posterior to the corneoscleral junction. The iris forms the anterior boundary of the pupil and lies anterior to the biconvex lens, which is suspended by zonular fibers (ciliary zonule) running from the ciliary body to the lens equator. Posteriorly, the vitreous body fills the vitreous chamber and apposes the neurosensory retina, which lines the inner surface of the posterior wall; the choroid occupies the vascular middle coat between retina and sclera. A lateral cutaway is the clearest way to teach the eye’s optical axis, because it places the cornea, aqueous spaces, lens, and vitreous in a single plane and makes the refractive surfaces easy to compare. The limbus and anterior chamber angle are practical landmarks for glaucoma discussions, where impaired aqueous humor outflow at the trabecular meshwork can elevate intraocular pressure and damage retinal ganglion cell axons. Lens position relative to the iris also matters in cataract surgery planning and for understanding shallow anterior chambers and pupillary block. Clean anatomy.
