Description
Rendered in sagittal cross section, the male ocular globe is organized around the optic axis, running from the anterior corneal apex through the pupil and lens to the posterior pole at the optic disc. The transparent cornea forms the anterior-most wall and is continuous peripherally with the sclera at the limbus, while the iris sits immediately posterior to the cornea with its central pupil aligned to the visual pathway. Posterior to the iris, the biconvex lens is suspended by zonular fibers (ciliary zonule) that span from the lens equator to the ciliary body, and the vitreous body occupies the large posterior cavity up to the retina. Deep to the retina, the vascular choroid lines the inner surface of the sclera as the middle tunic. Alignment matters here. A clean optic-axis view makes it easier to teach refraction at the cornea and lens and to connect accommodation to ciliary muscle contraction with zonular relaxation and increased lens curvature, the basis for near focus and the loss of near vision in presbyopia. It also helps explain why pathology at specific interfaces produces distinct symptoms: corneal edema blurs vision early, cataract opacifies the lens along the axis, and retinal detachment separates the neurosensory retina from the choroid, compromising photoreceptor support. Small misalignments have consequences. Use this rendering for gross anatomy and neuroanatomy teaching blocks on the visual system, ophthalmology lectures on refractive error and cataract surgery planning, and textbook figures that need clear depiction of the retina, choroid, and sclera as layered tunics.
