Description
Arising from the medial and lateral processes of the calcaneal tuberosity and the adjacent plantar aponeurosis, the abductor digiti minimi forms the most superficial muscle mass along the lateral margin of the sole. From a plantar perspective it runs anteriorly and slightly laterally, paralleling the lateral border of the foot, then narrows into a tendon that inserts on the lateral base of the proximal phalanx of the fifth toe (often with fibers blending toward the fifth metatarsophalangeal joint capsule). Medial to it you would expect the flexor digitorum brevis belly and the central portion of the plantar aponeurosis, while deeper in the lateral compartment lie the flexor digiti minimi brevis and opponens digiti minimi with the lateral plantar neurovascular bundle coursing between layers.
