Description
Viewed from the posterior aspect in anatomical position, the male skeleton is shown standing upright with the occipital bone and cervical to lumbar vertebrae aligned centrally, the scapulae flanking the thoracic cage, and the pelvis forming the bony ring inferiorly. Distally, the lower limb continues through the femur to the tibia and fibula, ending in the hindfoot where the calcaneus dominates the posterior contour and the calcaneal tuberosity projects most inferiorly. From that hindfoot base, the tarsal bones lead anteriorly into the metatarsals and phalanges, though the rear projection keeps the heel and lateral margins more apparent than the toes. Posterior foot osteology matters because the calcaneus is the weight-bearing cornerstone of the hindfoot and a primary surgical and trauma landmark.
