Description
Seen from behind, the male skull is dominated by the occipital bone, with the external occipital protuberance and superior nuchal lines positioned inferior to the paired parietal bones and their parietal eminences. Lateral to the midline, the mastoid regions of the temporal bones sit inferolateral to the parietals, while the posterior margins of the mandible and the angle (gonion) are partially appreciated at the inferolateral skull base. Inferior to the cranium, the vertebral column aligns along the median plane and continues into the sacrum between the iliac bones; the scapulae lie posterolaterally over the ribs, framing the thoracic cage. Coloring the cranial vault separately makes this posterior view a clean way to teach which bones contribute to the calvaria versus the facial skeleton, and it keeps attention on the occiput without losing whole-body orientation. Headache and neck pain patterns often relate to attachments along the nuchal lines (trapezius, sternocleidomastoid, semispinalis capitis), and this angle helps correlate palpable landmarks with the underlying bone. The same landmarks guide posterior scalp and suboccipital approaches, where staying oriented to the midline occipital crest and mastoid region reduces avoidable dissection into the wrong tissue planes.
