Description
Seen in lateral profile, the male cranium includes the frontal bone anteriorly, the parietal bone forming the superolateral vault, and the temporal bone with the squamous part contributing to the lateral wall. Inferior to the orbit, the zygomatic bone and its temporal process meet the zygomatic process of the temporal bone to form the zygomatic arch, with the maxilla positioned anteroinferiorly and the mandible lying inferior to the dentate maxillary alveolar process. Fracture emphasis centers on the facial skeleton, with disruption along the maxilla and zygomatic arch, and a highlighted break through the mandibular body or angle region adjacent to the molar-bearing alveolus. Teeth are seated in their alveolar sockets. Sutural lines remain visible across the calvaria. Lateral skull trauma is often assessed as a zygomaticomaxillary complex injury rather than an isolated cheekbone crack, because force transmission can propagate through the infraorbital rim and maxillary buttresses while altering orbital volume and producing enophthalmos or diplopia. A mandibular fracture in the body or angle frequently threatens the inferior alveolar nerve and can present with malocclusion, trismus, and step deformity at the occlusal plane, all findings that correlate cleanly with the fracture location shown here. This is a teaching-friendly arrangement for discussing the relationship of the zygomatic arch to the coronoid process, and why arch depression can mechanically limit mandibular opening.
