Description
Running in blue over a right lateral skull and upper cervical spine, the superficial venous network of the scalp and face is shown in relation to the cranium, maxilla, mandible, and zygomatic bone. Expect the superficial temporal vein to course superior to the zygomatic arch and the facial vein to descend obliquely across the cheek and along the lateral margin of the mandible toward the neck, where tributaries converge toward the external and internal jugular pathways. Posteriorly, veins over the occiput track inferiorly toward the nuchal region, lying superficial to the cervical vertebrae and continuing into the lower neck near the clavicle and shoulder girdle. Bony landmarks guide the eye. A lateral view is the practical way to teach venous drainage patterns that respect surface anatomy and surgical planes, because many key channels cross palpable landmarks such as the mandibular body and zygomatic arch before entering deeper cervical routes.
