Arising from the superior mesenteric artery, the ileocolic artery courses inferiorly and to the right, then passes posterior to the terminal ileum and cecum before dividing into ileal, cecal, and colic branches that ascend along the medial border of the ascending colon. From this posterior orientation, the arterial arcades and the marginal artery can be appreciated tracking close to the mesenteric attachment, with vasa recta running laterally toward the colonic wall. Blue lymphatic channels accompany the arterial tree, converging from the cecum, appendix region, and proximal colon toward ileocolic nodes and on to the superior mesenteric nodal chain.
