Description
Posterior arm anatomy comes into focus from the shoulder girdle to the hand, with the humerus proximally and the radius and ulna running distally to the carpal and metacarpal bones. Along the posterior compartment, the brachial artery courses on the anterior aspect of the humerus before dividing in the cubital fossa into radial and ulnar arteries, which continue distally toward the wrist while sending branches around the elbow via the periarticular anastomoses. Superficial veins track in the subcutaneous plane, with the cephalic vein running laterally and the basilic vein medially, communicating around the elbow through the median cubital vein. Nerve trunks, including the radial nerve spiraling from medial to lateral in the radial groove and the ulnar nerve passing posterior to the medial epicondyle, provide key neurovascular context. Posterior perspective matters at the elbow because arterial collateral networks and superficial venous crossings are where clinicians work and where problems declare themselves. Cannulation and phlebotomy commonly target the median cubital vein, but the close relationship to the brachial artery across the cubital fossa explains why an aberrant superficial arterial branch can lead to accidental intra-arterial injection. The ulnar nerve at the cubital tunnel and the radial nerve near the lateral epicondyle also frame why posterior approaches to elbow surgery and trauma evaluation must respect neurovascular planes.
