Description
Running from the pelvis to the forefoot, the medial aspect of a male lower limb is presented with the femur, patella, tibia, fibula, and the tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges as osseous reference points for the vascular tree. Along the medial thigh, the femoral artery and femoral vein descend toward the adductor hiatus, continuing as the popliteal artery and vein posterior to the knee before giving rise to the anterior tibial and posterior tibial systems in the leg. Distally, the posterior tibial artery and its venae comitantes track inferiorly and slightly posterior to the medial border of the tibia toward the medial malleolus, where plantar branches course into the foot; the great saphenous vein runs superficially along the anteromedial leg and thigh, remaining anterior to the medial malleolus before draining proximally near the groin. Medial orientation matters because it aligns the viewer with landmarks used in vascular examination and access. Palpating the posterior tibial pulse just posterior to the medial malleolus, mapping the great saphenous vein for bypass conduit, or planning tibial revascularization for critical limb ischemia all depend on accurate relationships to the tibia, the knee, and the ankle. It also frames common pathology: great saphenous varicosities along the medial leg, and injury risk to the saphenous nerve during vein harvesting or endovenous procedures. Ideal for teaching lower limb vasculature in gross anatomy and clinical skills courses, this illustration also supports surgical atlases, interventional radiology references, and patient education on peripheral arterial disease and venous insufficiency, where medial surface landmarks guide discussion and examination.
